The Top Five Skills You Need To Become A UX Designer

There’s no denying that UX design is a complex field. However, it also happens to be one of the most interesting and exciting career paths available right now! If you’re interested in breaking into this industry, then there are a few skills that will definitely come in handy. Let’s take a look at some of the top skills required for this line of work:
In depth knowledge about user psychology
User Psychology As mentioned before, UX design requires an understanding of how users think as well as what they expect from certain interactions. While many people have studied human behavior throughout history, it can still be difficult to predict exactly why someone would do something without context. Understanding key points such as user needs, wants and motivations is essential for creating a successful design.
Familiarity with different design software
Design Software As you can imagine, most UX designers work with some type of graphic design software. This may include programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign. Being able to use these types of software will give you an edge over other applicants when it comes time to search for a job!
Knowledge about web development
Web Development While not all UX designers are familiar with coding languages, it’s definitely helpful to have at least some knowledge about how the web works. Understanding how browsers render pages, what constitutes a good user experience on the web and common issues that people face can be extremely valuable in this field.
An understanding of business and marketing concepts
Business & Marketing Concepts As a UX designer, you’ll often be working with teams that include members from other departments such as marketing or sales. It’s important to have a basic understanding of how these areas work in order to create designs that are effective and meet the needs of the company.
Familiarity with user research methods
User Research Methods In order to understand your users, you need to be able to collect data about them in an efficient manner. This may include using surveys, interviews, focus groups or creating personas/user stories. By understanding how to gather this information effectively, you’ll be able to design better products that more accurately reflect the needs of your target audience!

A Day In The Life of a UX Designer
With the pandemic still looming, many jobs have gone remote (in some cases, permanently). This is certainly the case for UX Designers. So, what’s a day in the life of a UX Designer working remotely?

One of the perks about working remotely is that you can make your own schedule! While some people enjoy waking up early and starting their day at around seven AM, others prefer to work in the evening. The whole point is being able to find a routine that works for you while still getting all of your tasks completed on time.
Remote workers are also often given more responsibility than those who are based out of an office location. This means UX designers need to be especially organized if they want to accomplish everything they set out for each day . A day in the life would look like the following:
- Check email and begin responding to any urgent messages.
- Review project updates and task lists for the day.
- Work on a design prototype for a new product.
- Participate in a conference call with stakeholders about changes to an existing product.
- Draft a report documenting findings from user research conducted the previous week.
- Upload revised designs for a website to the shared server.
- Submit time logs for the day.
While this may seem like a lot, it’s important to remember that many of these tasks can be completed in parallel! For example, you could be working on designs for one project while also participating in a call with stakeholders about another. The great thing about being a UX designer is that there are plenty of ways to be productive and stay organized.
